What is RiverTeachers?
The mission of the RiverTeachers program is to provide educational experiences that deepen students' knowledge of their surroundings, foster their connection with the Yuba River watershed, and inspire in them a sense of responsibility for the health of the watershed and its salmon population.
The RiverTeachers program focuses on two main objectives:
Providing opportunities for students to learn about salmon. Salmon have a fascinating life cycle and many unique adaptations; they are a key species that can help students understand the importance of habitat, healthy ecosystems, and interdependence between species;
Providing opportunities for students to explore the concept of a watershed. The watershed is a unifying concept that includes topics such as the water cycle, upstream / downstream influences on water quality, plant and animal indicators of watershed health, and human dependence on clean water.
The program aims to provide members of the community (adults and children alike) with quality information and the skills and motivation they need to make informed decisions about watershed stewardship.

School Assemblies
RiverTeachers offers two assemblies designed to bring the watershed into the classroom. Both assemblies include slides, demonstrations, and interactive elements and are adaptable to Kindergarten through 8th grade with possible high-school options. Assemblies last 45 minutes to an hour and address both state and national science standards. For each assembly, we have compiled a packet of pre-assembly activities and follow-up ideas for teachers interested in expanding on the experience.
Journey of the Salmon takes students on a tour of the life cycle of a chinook salmon in the Yuba River. Slides, stories, and costumes provide an entertaining and interactive way for students to learn about the salmon's adaptations, habitat needs, and what we can all do to ensure their survival.
In The Great Water Mystery, students follow Detective Drizzle on a search for clues about a mysterious substancewater. The mystery leads them through the water cycle and the Yuba Watershed where they meet a number of watershed residents and learn what they can do to keep our watershed healthy.
Resource Library
RiverTeachers is building a library of watershed resources for teachers and other educators. Contact the SYRCL office for more information about checking out materials. We have reference books on water and salmon, curriculum and activity guides, children's books, posters, videos, and kits containing all materials and instructions for a particular activity.
