SYRCL's RiverScience program focuses on the development of scientifically-valid restoration efforts and community-based monitoring.

What is RiverScience?

Science serves as a foundation for SYRCL's work. From law to advocacy, watershed science is an integral element in SYRCL's continual growth as a credible environmental organization. Our RiverScience program uses water quality monitoring and analysis, research, education, advocacy, and collaboration to help protect and restore the Yuba Watershed. Scientific data collection and community education stand at the forefront of our RiverScience programs:
  • River Monitoring, a citizen-based water quality monitoring program dedicated to protecting and restoring the health of the Yuba River.
  • Creation of "State of the Yuba," an annual report using data gathered by SYRCL monitors and scientists.
  • Education for elected officials, policy makers, and the public about the need for clean-up of mercury and arsenic.
  • Creation of the Watershed Academy.
  • Facilitation of the Adopt-A-Watershed Program and other science-related programs in schools.

    River Monitors
With over 70 trained volunteers from the community, SYRCL's River Monitoring Program is making history. A project of this kind has never existed before in the Yuba Watershed. Our incredible volunteers range from high school students to senior citizens, dedicating a year of their time and energy to the river. The program is based on the scientifically-credible RiverKeeper programs that have been working successfully nationwide to make watersheds healthy for fish and wildlife and safe for fishing, swimming, and drinking. The natural state of the Yuba has been impacted by hydropower facilities, various land uses, historic mining, and dams. In 2001, when high levels of Enterococcus bacteria were detected in the South Yuba, river monitors spent hundreds of hours working on the problem. SYRCL river monitors are taking the health of the river into their own hands; they are committed to making a difference in the community in which they live.
