What is RiverPeople?
In 1983, a small group of concerned citizens banded together to oppose the construction of two dams on the South Yuba River. Nineteen years and 4,500 members later, the South Yuba River Citizens League stands strong. The dam projects have been defeated and 39 miles of the South Yuba have become permanently protected under Wild and Scenic designation. A small community has demonstrated that people can make a difference; people can protect the place in which they live, work, and play. We hope to empower other communities by replicating our successful programs in other watersheds throughout California.
A Community Effort
Our 4,500 members are business and private property owners with a diversity of interests and a common love of the Yuba River. Over 500 active volunteers are an essential part of SYRCL's efforts and success. Interested in being a part of our amazing team of volunteers? Find out more about how to get involved.

The Sierra Citizen
Educating people on the issues is where taking care of the environment begins. In January of 2001, we distributed the first issue of SYRCL's quarterly newspaper, the Sierra Citizen. Our goal is simple: we want the newspaper to educate and inform SYRCL members and a broader Sierra community on environmental issues and perspectives not commonly heard through traditional forms of media. The Sierra Citizen will be a vehicle to examine issues with a professional, intelligent, and respected voice. At the same time, we want to be a bridge for SYRCL members with updates on SYRCL issues, programs, events, as well as acknowledgements of volunteers and supporters. Empowering people with accurate information is the first step in creating a conscious, concerned, and responsible group of citizens.
A complete archive of the Sierra Citizen is available here on our website.
