General Office
This includes large mailings, copying, filing, river monitor prep and phone calling. It also includes newspaper delivery (the Sierra Citizen) and postering for events. Weekly volunteers needed.
Events
SYRCL loves parties, dancing, and having a good time, so helping at events is all about that. You can try your hand at bartending, tickets, food, the SYRCL booth, security, set-up, take-down, and lots of other things in between. From auction in the spring to our film festival in the winter, we have about 10-20 events a year to staff with volunteers.
SYRCL Tabling/Boothing:
If you haven’t seen our booth, you’ll want to check it out soon! Not only is it cool and professional, but it attracts people…so be prepared to talk. We put out a SYRCL table or our booth at fairs, festivals, and other events. We are looking for some dedicated river lovers to talk about SYRCL and handout materials
River Monitoring:
We currently have over 70 monitors who go out to the river monthly to collect water samples on the Yuba watershed. For more information about the program, click here.
Great Yuba Clean-Up:
Over 500 people turn out to clean the Yuba each September. This is an easy and fun way to give back to the river, not to mention a perfect family event. We throw a huge party afterwards for all of the volunteers at Memorial Park in Grass Valley.
Most frequently asked questions about volunteering at SYRCL.
How many hours do I have to work?
As many or as few as you would like. Some SYRCL volunteers work one day a week for 2-3 hours. Other folks volunteer monthly or annually. For office help, we prefer to have people who can commit to some regular hours, weekly or monthly.
Can I pick and choose what I want to do?
Sure! We try to work with everyone based on what your skills and likes are. Although, we do have many office type jobs (data entry, phone calling) that need to be done on a regular basis. So of course, the less picky the better!
I like the river though, can I work outside?
Well, we do have our yearly River Clean-Up event in September and our River Monitoring Program.
But what do I get in return?
LOTS of THANK YOUS!! Well, there is the quarterly recognition in the Sierra Citizen. Plus, if you work at events, you get free admission. And there is always the incredible satisfaction that you are doing your part in protecting our beloved Yuba River!
